The Confederation of Asian Football (AFC) has given the rights to host the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup for the first time since 1979. This decision was taken at the AFC Women’s Football Committee meeting.
Hindustan was recommended to be hosted by the AFC Women’s Football Committee in February. In a letter to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), AFC Secretary General Dato Windsor John wrote, ‘The committee has delegated the rights to host the AFC Women’s Asia Cup 2022 finals to All India Football’
AIFF President Praful Patel said, “I have to thank the Asian Football Confederation who thought it appropriate for us to host the AFC Women’s Asia Cup in 2022. He said, “The tournament will encourage aspiring women players and it will bring social revolution as far as women’s football is concerned in the country. ’12 teams will participate in the tournament, which has been extended to 8 teams from the previous stage.
India will qualify directly as the host. The tournament will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The hosting for the AIFF is a boost to morale as it was also given the hosting of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, which will be held next year. Hindustan hosted the AFC Under-16 Championship in 2016 and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said, “This tournament will play an important role in popularizing women’s football in India.” Before the Women’s Asia Cup 2022, FIFA will host the Under-17 Women’s World Cup which will help us to increase the rhythm.
