“Unsafe” is set to expire on HBO after its upcoming Season 5, Variety has learned.
The critically acclaimed comedy was renewed for a fifth season in May 2020, as season 4 had just begun. The fifth and final season is scheduled to begin production later this month and begin later this year.
“Issa has turned insecurity into humor,” said HBO executive vice president Amy Gravit. “The show is as important as it is heartwarming, and it resonates strongly with its in-person audience as Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and writers put it on. This talented team made a terrific finale. Imagined. Weather for ‘Insecure’ and we hope to have many more stories to tell with this eccentric group of allies. ”
The series co-producer Issa Rae leads the ensemble, which also includes Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seal and Alexander Hodge.
The show was produced by Rai and Larry Wilmore. Rae also produces the series alongside Prentice Penny, Melina Matsukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Amy Aniobi and Jim Claveris. The show is partly based on Rai’s web series “Awaken Black Girl”.
“Insecure” has received widespread critical acclaim over its four seasons, with an average series rating of 95% critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes. It has garnered a host of award wins and nominations throughout its run. Including an Emmy nomination for lead actress in the comedy category and two Golden Globe nominations for Rai.
