We usually went to South Cinema every year by choosing five or ten films from each language for our best lists. But the party-poider epidemic not only limited the films released this year, but also limited our mental strength to go to a theater and enjoy a film. Thanks to the services of OTT platforms, some films came directly to our living rooms. From Anushka Shetty’s Nishbadam to Salman’s Maniyarale Ashokan, the 7 South films of 2020 which released directly on OTT and spoiled with us!
Before the lockdown came into force in March, we had films of superstars like Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Mohanlal, Allu Arjun, Mahesh Babu etc. which screened theaters. Most of them were disappointing, but a couple of them were more than decent. And then after the lockdown, most of the films entered the OTT space. Not all were good, but there have been some pleasant surprises.
At the end of this special year, we select 10 films from the South that have influenced us the most in 2020.
Kannum Kannum Kolayadithal
Salman and Ritu Verma in Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithal
A romcom is also a thriller, Kannum Kannum Kolayadithal Most parts are attractive, and Dulare benefits from a beautiful chemistry between Salman and Ritu Verma. Twists and turns can be very predictable, but it is the treatment that makes this film so appealing.
Ka Pa Ransingam
Vijay Sethupathi and Aishwarya Rajesh in Ransingam from Cai
One of the victims of the lockdown, it was paid for per-scene release on the social drama Zee Plex, but turned out to be a profitable venture for the stage (as opposed to a fixed one) Cake yellow). Aishwarya Rajesh excels in the lead role, while Vijay Sethupathi rules the screen in a more supportive capacity.
Aparna Balmurali and Suriya in Sorai Potru
Sorai PotruDirected by Sudha Kongara (See also for his short Thongam In netflix anthology Pava Kadhaigal) Is a well-made underdog film inspired by real-life stories. Surya is in the lead role underlining its collective appeal And still manages to make his layman’s role extraordinary. And of course, who can forget Aparna Balamurali’s scene-stealing performance as the protagonist’s strong half!
Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde in Alla Vaikunthapuramulu
Plot-wise, this film by Trivikram Srinivas is nothing new. It is a typical family entertainment, but that makes Ala Vaikunthaparamulu So fascinating that the ‘entertainer’ aspect works impressively with its amusing mix of romance, comedy, songs and family drama. “Buta Bomma”“The song proves that COVID-19 is not the only rage of 2020. But of course, the real reason why Ala Vaikunthaparamulu The work is due to its lead star, Allu Arjun, who is absolutely brilliant, laughing, doing smooth dance moves as usual, and dancing to motion moments!
Middle class melodies
Anand Deverakonda and Varsha Bolamma in Middle Class Melodies
While Vijay Devarkonda had a disappointing year World famous lover, His younger brother Anand entertains a loving family who came straight to Amazon Prime. The strength of the film, apart from a good chemistry between Devarakonda and Varsha Bolamma, is in its simplicity And its ability can surprise you without being immersed in water.
Still from Bhimsen Nalmaharaja
The second film on this list to revolve after (after) a meal. Middle class melodies), This Kannada film is a very good smorgasbord of entertaining elements. It suffers from length issues and screenplays, but overall, Bhimsen Nalmaharaja A good acting, good entertainment. Other than that its music is just awesome!
Neeraj Madhav and Virtue Elizabeth in Gautam Thorn
A part of the age drama, it stars Malayalam film The family man Neeraj Madhav in the lead role. The young actor, who is very naturally talented, plays the role quite cleverly, as a youth, having to deal with the fact that his first car is a Nano. Surprisingly with the third act, the film is very captivating and emotional.
Biju Menon and Prithviraj in Ayyappanam Koshyum
I can’t help but feel a sense of sadness when I write Ayyappanam koshyum. The film exits its director Saatchi’s Sonsong, which passed away months after its release. Ayyappanam koshyum Saxi remains the best film both as a writer and director, as it relates to the unsuspecting struggles of male Bravados. Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon both excelled in lead roles, with a superb supporting cast.
Shobhana and Suresh Gopi in Varan Avshyamund
One of the best feel good entertainers of the year Varen Avshyamund Dulare is the producer’s debut in Salman and Sathyan is the first film to be directed by Anoop Kathyan, son of Anthikkad. Dulare, however, takes a minor role in the film, instead allowing stalwarts Suresh Gopi and Shobhana (remembering their amazing chemistry) and a qualified Kalyani Priyadarshan to make headlines. whereas Varen Avshyamund No novel can give a plot, the one that works for the film is its final moments and is a good mix of humor and drama.
See you again soon
Fahd Fasil in CH Soon
Hollywood movie inspired Searching, Fly The director Mahesh Narayanan gives us one of the best experimental thrillers of Malayalam cinema in recent times. Shot through iPhones, and portrayed solely through laptop screens and mobile phones, the director proves that lockdown shouldn’t be a reason to curb your creativity. It also boasts of outstanding performances from the cast – it is a charming Roshan Mathew, a brilliant Fahad Faasil (who is also awesome) Trance) And Darshana Rajendran in the film’s best performance.
