Spike cases of coronovirus in at least one New York City borough forced the reopening of an area hospital that had not been used since the initial, dark days of the epidemic, the official said on Monday.
Officials said the temporary facility at Staten Island University Hospital was operated from late June to early April during preliminary action against the epidemic.
The first patients to enter the hospital in this open area are expected to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday. It will be able to hold 108 patients for now and can be expanded to 250 if necessary.
According to data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 14 new cases were discovered on Staten Island between November 14 and thereafter on Thursday.
As a point of comparison, on the Fourth of July, Labor Day 7 and Columbus Day on October 11, the number of new cases in those days were 12, 19 and 14 respectively.
Staten Island Borough President James Otto hired his own constituents on Monday.
“We control our destiny and we’re not doing as good a job as we should be,” Otto told NBC News on Monday.
“It’s about personal responsibility. It’s a big part of who loves to talk about personal responsibility in a big, global, political context. It’s about us. It’s about our own behavior. “
Staten Island University Hospital Executive Director Drs. Brahim Ardolik broke “Spike in Social Distinguishing Rules and Wearing Masks” in late October and early November. But he is hoping that Staten Island residents are adjusting their behavior in view of the increase in this recent case.
“I think there is a feeling that there is a sense of urgency,” Dr. Ardolic said. “The problem is that we went down so dramatically in cases (in the early summer) and stayed for so long, there was a silence. People lost that natural fear and anxiety.”
Meadow Hospital is actually a new building that was slated to open this spring as a long-term psychiatric care facility. But when the outbreak of the epidemic occurred, it was quickly put to use for Kovid-19 care and the space was set aside at the end of 2020, with fears of a spike.
Staten Island swaths were classified as Andrew Brown’s yellow and orange zones by the New York government on Monday.

Staten Island, however, is far from the only Empire State County battling a resurgence in the virus.
Cuomo said that from November 2 through Monday, the number of New York State residents in the hospital for Kovid-19 has increased from 1,227 to 2,724.
With three days and Christmas coming exactly one month after the calendar, Cuomo pleaded with Ghatak to stay away from him during the holidays and to love his family members.
He thanked his daughter, Maria Kennedy Kyomo, for being in Chicago and opposed any idea of coming back to New York this week for turkey.
The Governor said, “It is a deep thank you, it is a more meaningful thank you for keeping families separated.”
“Maria loves me very much, she is not coming to celebrate Thanksgiving with me. How much she loves me. We have to bring her head there.”
