The late Asif Basra played a small but influential role in Imtiaz Ali’s 2007 film “Jab We Met” starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. The filmmaker recalls how Asif had the brains and skills of an actor who could also perform a small role with conviction. He played a station salesman in Ali’s film. Recalling the late actor, Imtiaz Ali said “For me, Asif is a special part of a special film. He is a brilliant actor. “He was a great actor and it was very easy to work with him. This (his death) is really a loss.” I remember that when making We Met, I wanted an intelligent actor who could tell what I wanted to say and present. I wanted to show two qualities at the same time – Leshari and Humor – through that role. I wanted him to be threatening and funny at the same time. “So, for the role, I wanted a special actor who had the mind and skill to perform.” I know Asif through theater in Mumbai. This is what took me years ago. “We couldn’t work together after Jab We Met. I haven’t been able to move around to work with him but I’ve seen his other films. He’s a fascinating actor. I’ll miss him in films.”
